Recollection

My documentary photography project revolves around the demise of a small, abandoned Bulgarian village called Krushovitsa, which holds a special place in my heart. It is where I spent most of my young life, and where my children enjoyed their summers. Through the lens of my camera, I feel privileged to share my wonderful memories with you.

Over the years, the village has been greatly affected by political instability and economic migration, resulting in a profound transformation of its appearance. The population has dwindled from 2000 residents to a mere 300 in just 30 years. The elderly inhabitants now struggle to make ends meet, living off a meagre £150 per month.

As a Bulgarian expatriate, returning to this land laden with memories and steeped in my personal history and traditions, I have endeavoured to capture its essence. My aim is to reflect the beauty and sadness of this forgotten place, shedding light on the impact of rapid urbanisation and globalisation on the most vulnerable parts of Bulgarian society.

Join me on a journey to Krushovitsa, a ghost town where its buildings and streets have been left empty and forgotten. Together, we will explore the remnants of my past and uncover the present realities of a changing world.
